New year, new you: quitting smoking is well worth it

As 2026 begins, Smokefree Liverpool is encouraging smokers to make quitting their top resolution – because it’s well worth it for your health, your wallet, and your future.

Smoking remains the biggest cause of preventable illness and death, but the benefits of quitting start straight away. Within minutes, your body begins to recover. Within weeks, breathing improves and energy levels rise. And within a year, your risk of heart disease is cut in half.

The financial benefits are just as powerful. In England each smoker spends an estimated £2,338 a year on tobacco.

Quit now, and by next Christmas you could have that money back in your pocket – enough for a family holiday, home improvements, or simply more money for the things that matter most.

To give smokers an extra boost, anyone who signs up with Smokefree Liverpool between 1 January and 13 February and achieves a validated four-week quit will be entered into a prize draw to win a £60 Love2Shop voucher. It’s a great way to start the year with a win.

Smokefree Liverpool offers free, expert support to help you quit. This includes one-to-one advice, stop smoking medicines, and Swap to Stop, which provides free e-cigarette starter kits for eligible smokers. Whether you’ve tried before or this is your first attempt, our team is here to help you succeed.

One recent success story comes from Hesh (pictured), who joined Smokefree Liverpool after his GP recommended quitting. He explained: “I decided to quit smoking because of the harm it was causing to my health and my mood… Initially I started with the gum, which didn’t work for me, my advisor recommended using a vape.”

Five months later, Hesh says the change has been life-changing: “The symptoms I used to get from smoking have reduced by 80% which to me is a win. I feel much better, I feel in a safer position, and I have saved tons of money! In the future I will do another programme with Smokefree Liverpool to quit vaping too – but one day at a time!”

His experience shows that with the right support, lasting change is possible.

Cabinet Member for Public Health, Councillor Harry Doyle said: “The New Year is the perfect time to reset and start enjoying the benefits of a smokefree life.

“Quitting now means better health and more money for the things that really matter.”

Professor Matt Ashton, Liverpool’s Director of Public Health, added: “It can take many smokers up to 30 tries before they quit for good.

“Our advice is simple: never give up on giving up. Every attempt gets you closer to success.”
