Update on The National Lottery’s Big Eurovision Welcome Event

On Sunday evening (6 May), Liverpool played host to an incredible live show which took over the area in and around St George’s Hall. It was a real celebration of the city, its musical heritage, Ukraine and Eurovision – featuring a comeback performance from Frankie Goes to Hollywood, as well as star turns from Conchita, The Lightning Seeds and Atomic Kitten.

The landmark event also featured a stunning show courtesy of 624 drones and 200-foot cranes featuring impressive aerial performers.

Following some comments on social media and in the press,  Claire McColgan, Director of Culture Liverpool, has issued the following statement:

“We’re incredibly proud of The National Lottery’s Big Eurovision Welcome. It was an amazing, free, ticketed event with a great crowd and which we know audiences across the UK will love when they see the highlights on BBC One tonight.

“Event safety experts confirmed that at no point was anyone in danger, there were no serious medical incidents and we were comfortably within the available capacity.

“Before the event began, people were keen to gather in front of the stage and this caused a small number to feel uncomfortable. These individuals were helped out of that situation and the team then ensured this area remained safe and comfortable for those in it once the show started – which went off without any issues.

“There has been overwhelmingly positive feedback to Sunday night, and we look forward to all our upcoming events celebrating Eurovision.”

Highlights of The National Lottery’s Big Eurovision Welcome and The Turquoise Carpet Opening Ceremony will air on BBC One at 18:30 tonight (Monday 8 May) as part of a special programme, Eurovision Welcomes The World.
